Headquarters – Illkirch, France
Illkirch-Graffenstaden is a large suburb of Strasbourg in north-eastern France near the German border. Home to ~27,0000 people, the commune was formed when the villages of Illkirch and Graf(f)enstaden were combined, creating a long main street lined by a mix of traditional and modern buildings. Today, the German culture and lifestyle predominates in what is one of the fastest growing cities in not only France, but the entire European continent.
A central location near the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, the Rhine and the forest Illkirch-Graffenstaden make it uniquely picturesque. The heavy engineering industries that once powered its economy have been largely replaced with new types of manufacturing, including biotechnology, service-based business, and more. The military housing at the French 2nd Armored Brigade and the German 291st Light Infantry Battalion is also here.
The city is home to the Parc d’Innovation, which supports companies commercializing emerging technologies, the International Space University and the Integral Membrane Proteins Research and Services (IMPReSs) facility, which is focused on biotechnology and cell signaling. In addition to Polyplus, other companies of note include THIEME France, MP Biomedicals S.A.S., Chiral Technologies Europe SAS and SENSIENT SAVORY FLAVORS FRANCE.
Loos Site – Loos, France
Located in Northern France, Loos is a suburb of Lille with a population of approximately 23,000. It is known for its traditional architecture, including several UNESCO World Heritage sites, and was also the site of the Battle of Loos during the Great War. The Loos Memorial commemorates over 20,000 British officers and men who fell in the area but have no known graves.
Once a coal mining town, Lille has become an international hub for arts and culture, with connections to Paris, London and Brussels via high-speed rail and the Channel Tunnel. The metropolitan area is also a top educational destination in France with numerous universities. On the business side, the Lille area is home to EuraTechnologies, one of Europe’s largest tech innovation centers, Eurasanté, the third largest health cluster in France and devoted to tech transfer and business development in the life sciences sector and a large insurance center with numerous head offices.
There are many biotech companies in the Loos/Lille area, including Bayer Healthcare, Siagast, ImaBiotechm HCS Pharma, Adaptherapy, Anagenesis Biotechnologies, Domain Therapeutics and PeptiMimesis, among others.
APAC Office - Shanghai, China
Shanghai, China is lauded as a critical global center for finance, manufacturing, research and development, science and technology and other sectors. With 30-40 million residents, it is the most populous metropolitan area (~25 million city dwellers) and a main industrial center in China. Several Economic and Technological Development Zones across Shanghai hold strong positions in steelmaking, shipbuilding, car manufacturing and others.
The Chinese characters for Shanghai combined mean “On the Sea”, and the Port of Shanghai is the world’s busiest container port. As a result, the culture reflects contributions from local people and international residents from Europe, America, Japan and India. This fact and the presence of over 60 universities and colleges also make Shanghai a top education destination in the country.
Perhaps most interestingly, Shanghai boasts the longest metro system with the world’s fastest train, the Shanghai Maglev Train; houses the second tallest building and second largest theme park, Shanghai Disney, in the world; and features world’s largest indoor ski resort.
Xpress Biologics SA – Milmort, Begium
Milmort is a town of just over 2,500 located in the Eastern Belgian province of Liège near Herstal. It is the only Belgian province bordering three different countries (The Netherlands, Germany and Luxemburg). In application, the city of Liège and its suburbs are located about halfway between Brussels, Belgium and Cologne and Bonn in Germany.
Liège is the third largest river port on the continent, and was previously considered the industrial heart of the municipality of Wallonia. This has transitioned over time to include different industries and 10% population of students. Residents of the area benefit from the maritime climate of mild winters and summers and carry great appreciation of the ocean. Eating oysters is a local favorite, celebrated at the Milmort Oyster Festival every December, and featuring more than 35,000 oysters served to local and international attendees along with fish soup, pain gris bread and white wine.
The Hauts-Sarts/Milmort Industrial Park is host to companies such as Galliker Logistics, TNT, Air Liquide, Lyreco, Bakker Logistics and Sketchers. Biotech companies in Herstal and Liège include Accessia Pharma, KiOmed Pharma Artialis, Convert Pharmaceuticals, DeuterOncology, EyeD Pharma, Hyloris Pharmaceuticals, Imcyse, Immunodiagnostic Systems and Mithra Pharmaceuticals, among others.
Bio Elpida – Saint-Priest, France
With over 40,000 inhabitants, Saint-Priest is the fourth largest suburb of the city of Lyon. For a long time, however, it was a small village of 2,000 involved mostly in agriculture.
Today, with close connections to Lyon, Saint-Priest is experiencing an influx of new industries and technologies while still maintaining its traditional city center and historical buildings, including the French Chateau de Saint-Priest, which was first constructed in the 10th century. Visitors to Saint-Priest can also view contemporary sculptures as part of the “Art in the city” ensemble and enjoy the forest of Feuilly, a protected corridor that connects Saint-Priest to Lyon.
Our Bio Elpida group is the primary biotech company in Saint-Priest. However, numerous companies involved in protein production, diagnostics, in silico technology and the development of anti-infectives, cancer immunotherapies and vaccines, small-molecule drugs and microbiome therapies, among other activities, are in nearby Lyon.
